This week in the STEAM lab 2nd graders used quadrat boxes to collect data about the number of living lints in a defined area of the open space behind G-pod. Next week they’ll collect data from the playground and garden and look for patterns in the data that help explain the relationships between living and non-living things in an environment.
The third grades continued learning about animal adaptions and how they help a species survive in their habitat. They investigated 3 different models of bird beaks and collected data in order to answer the question “What is the best beak?” They will finish their investigations and draw conclusions from their data next week.”
During Free Exploration time, 1st-graders built with legos and designed with pattern blocks. Students also built their own mazes for coding mice and used the Osos for making pictures with tangrams.

STEAMworks - Week of 2/28
This week in the STEAM lab we started new life science units with 2nd and 3rd grades. The 2nd graders explored different ecosystems on Valhalla’s campus (playground, garden, open space) and looked for the living and non-living things that make up each ecosystem.
For third grade, we created a mini-zoo in the STEAM lab. We had 6 different types of animals in our zoo - a rabbit, 3 guinea pigs, guppies and a tetra fish, a hamster, a leopard gekko, and a corn snake. Student groups had to identify the 6 different types of animal and list adaptations that helped to identify them. A big thanks to Ms. Shearer, Ms. Hanko, Ms. Ramirez, Ms. Robinett, and Ms. Snitselaar for sharing their classroom pets for the day!
